ho-ri-zon: monuments, postcards, rocks and confessions.
This year the midseason program took place at the Tschumi pavilion. The recently graduated artists Jochem van den Wijngaard (FMI, painting), Klaudija Ylaite (Academie Minerva, fine arts) and Vanina Tsvetkova (FMI, MADTech) created works based on their views of public space in different parts of the city and a overview at het Tschumipaviljoen. Anna-Fleuri Wolters (Minerva Academy, design) conceived and created all the expressions.
You could explore the city and find your way through this years midseason show. A map was handed to the public at Tschumipaviljoen (or online). During the first weekend we provided corona proof one person bottles of champagne to accompany people on this search.

The concept of the exhibition is formed by the restrictions of the coronavirus. In case stricter measures have to be observed, one can still come into contact with physical art.
week 1: artist ambitions, artist statements

“On 23rd of September we all met at a former gay sauna now being inhabited by Het Resort. Briefly introducing each other we walked to see the Tschumi pavilion. That peculiar building made out of glass where every one of us have seen it but have never entered before. Here it is, a keyholder of Tschumi pavilion has been waiting for us. The doors are open, we can enter. Illuminating, we see every passerby, they see us walking inside, yet the feeling of isolation hits us. We feel safe, as if partially invisible. Sky becomes grey colour, rain starts pouring on a glass ceiling, we look up, feels like a waterfall. Anna Fleuri takes photos of our newly formed band. All set.
We will meet again to travel and greet Josje Hattink, Josine Sibum Siderius and Anika Mariam Ahmed at Kunsthuis SYB. Warm welcoming with dutch style lunch. Josje brings up a notion of special words we carry to define our artistic process. Each of us finds a certain word that describes what we are aiming for. Now we will present what occupies our practice. The workshop begins. Deciphering our own projects and artist statements in reflection of what we are aiming gave us a new perception not only of ourselves but each other. Josje and Anika gave each of us individual homework, to reflect, to attempt, to rewrite our artist statements. We thank them, finish the last bits of coffee and go back on the road. Now we will search for more words to carry in representing our artistic practice.”

“Op 23 september ontmoetten we elkaar allemaal in een voormalige homosauna die nu nog het hoofdkwartier is van Het Resort. We stelden elkaar kort voor en liepen naar het Tschumi-paviljoen. Dat eigenaardige gebouw van glas wat we het allemaal hebben gezien, maar nog nooit eerder binnen zijn geweest. Hier is het, een sleutelhouder van het Tschumi-paviljoen wacht op ons.
De deuren gaan open, we kunnen naar binnen. We zien voorbijgangers. Zij zien ons naar binnen lopen, maar toch bekruipt ons het gevoel van isolatie. We voelen ons veilig, alsof we gedeeltelijk onzichtbaar zijn. De lucht wordt grijs van kleur, regen begint op het glazen plafond te gieten. We kijken omhoog, het lijkt een waterval. Anna Fleuri maakt portretten van de groep.
We zullen elkaar weer ontmoeten om te reizen naar Kunsthuis SYB, waar we Josje Hattink, Josine Sibum Siderius en Anika Mariam Ahmed begroeten. We krijgen een warm welkom met lunch in Nederlandse stijl. Josje oppert om speciale woorden te gebruiken die ons artistieke proces kunnen definiëren. Ieder van ons vindt een bepaald woord dat beschrijft waar we naar streven. Daarna presenteerden we wat ons werk, onze praktijk.
De workshop begint. Door onze eigen projecten en artist statements te ontcijferen als weerspiegeling van wat we nastreven, kregen we niet alleen een nieuwe percepties van onszelf, maar ook van elkaar. Josje en Anika gaven ons allemaal individueel huiswerk, om na te denken en te proberen om onze artist statements te herschrijven. We bedanken ze, drinken de laatste koffie op en gaan weer op pad. Nu zullen we opzoek naar woorden die onze artistieke praktijk representeren.”

week 2: online presence, public space exercises

“Online presence is an important part of presenting oneself as an artist. In week two the artist got the homework of googling themselves and each other. The results were discussed in Ellen de Haans online presence class. Klaudija, Vanina an Jochem got tips on how to improve their websites. Anna-Fleuri really needs to make a website and change her DEPOP name (although it is nice to see what slippers she likes.)
We would like to invite the readers to google themselves as well and think about how they come across in the search results…

Exercises for artists working in public space
1. Search for an artwork in public space. Now find a better place for this artwork.
2. Make a miniature version of your own work and carry it with you for a week. Photograph it on ten different locations.
3. Find a dated artwork in public space. Add something to it for contemporary viewers.
4. Frame an already existing situation in public space.
5. Find an object on the streets. Take it home, edit it and return it to the place you found it.
6. Measure something in public space, using an object you carry on you (no measuring tape or other official measuring device). Now build a replica of this object according to your measurements.
7. Study various representations of public space (think of maps, photo’s, films) and add something that only exists on the representation, to its real version.
(Example: You’re watching a film, a landscape is shown and you hear a voice over. The voice over is subtitled onto the landscape. In this case you could make a cut out version of this film’s subtitles and place it on the location the film shot was recorded.)
8. Walk into a store, ask the owner what kind of sculpture they would like to have. Design it together.”

“Online presence is een belangrijk onderdeel van het presenteren van jezelf als kunstenaar. In week twee kregen de kunstenaar de opdracht om zichzelf en elkaar te googelen. De resultaten werden besproken in de meeting met Ellen de Haan. Klaudija, Vanina en Jochem kregen tips om hun websites te verbeteren. Anna-Fleuri moet een website maken en haar DEPOP-naam veranderen (al is het wel leuk om te zien welke slippers ze leuk vindt.) We willen de lezers graag uitnodigen om ook zelf te googelen en na te denken over hoe ze overkomen in de zoekresultaten ...

Oefeningen voor kunstenaars die in de openbare ruimte werken
1. Zoek een kunstwerk in de openbare ruimte. Zoek nu een betere plek voor dit kunstwerk.
2. Maak een miniatuurversie van je eigen werk en draag het een week met je mee. Fotografeer het op tien verschillende locaties.
3. Zoek een gedateerd kunstwerk in de openbare ruimte. Voeg er iets aan toe voor hedendaagse kijkers.
4. Kadreer een reeds bestaande situatie in de openbare ruimte.
5. Zoek een object op straat. Neem het mee naar huis, bewerk het en breng het terug naar de plaats waar u het gevonden heeft.
6. Meet iets in de openbare ruimte met een voorwerp dat je bij je draagt (geen meetlint of ander officieel meetinstrument). Bouw nu een replica van dit object volgens uw metingen.
7. Bestudeer verschillende representaties van de openbare ruimte (denk aan kaarten, foto's, filmpjes) en voeg iets toe dat alleen op de representatie bestaat, aan de echte versie. (Voorbeeld: je kijkt naar een film, er wordt een landschap vertoond en je hoort een voice-over. De voice-over wordt ondertiteld op het landschap. In dit geval kun je een uitgesneden versie van de ondertitels van deze film maken en deze op de locatie plaatsen de filmopname is opgenomen.)
8. Loop een winkel binnen, vraag de eigenaar wat voor soort sculptuur ze zouden willen hebben. Ontwerp het samen.”

week 3: project proposals

"The third week started with a weekly meeting by the new building of het resort. We discussed many topics defining the thread between our artistic positions. Sunday we spent in presenting our ideas and finding a way of working together. Working together has naturally grown as a mentality towards the accomplishment of the final work. The defined methodology unites under one roof certain topics (personal, romantic, social, guerilla - for example: Confessions about prohibited things you’ve done in a public space(Vanina); The pavilion as a station, we arrive and depart(Jochem); How to be noticed as individual in a public space(Klaudia); Poems in a public space as little collectibles/ guerilla treasure hunt(Anna-Fleury)). The common thread weaves across our works through a defined manner of execution and presentation; common interests, approach, materials. Now as we have found the bounding elements, we are ready to write our project proposals consciously and without any hesitation."

“De derde week begon met een wekelijkse bijeenkomst in het nieuwe pand van het resort. We bespraken veel onderwerpen die de rode draad tussen onze artistieke posities bepalen. Zondag brachten we samen door om onze ideeën aan elkaar te presenteren en het vinden van een manier om samen te werken.
Samenwerken is een werkwijze op weg naar de voltooiing van de uiteindelijke werken. De gedefinieerde methodiek verenigt bepaalde onderwerpen (persoonlijk, romantisch, sociaal, guerrilla). Bijvoorbeeld: bekentenissen over verboden dingen die je hebt gedaan in een openbare ruimte (Vanina); Het paviljoen als station, we komen aan en vertrekken (Jochem); Hoe opgemerkt te worden als individu in een openbare ruimte (Klaudia); Gedichten in een openbare ruimte als kleine verzamelobjecten / guerrilla-speurtocht (Anna-Fleuri). De rode draad weeft door onze werken door gemeenschappelijke interesses, aanpak, materialen. Nu we de verbindende elementen hebben gevonden, zijn we klaar om onze projectvoorstellen bewust en zonder enige aarzeling te schrijven.”

week 4-6: concept ready

"During these the main concept was born. We will work under the name of horizon. Jochem and his searches, Vanina will listen to confessions, Anna is making a map and I will work around rejection. This will be a tourist attraction center, a give away book shelf, a station to collect a map for a tour around the city corners. Next to it we had a follow up meeting with Josh Hattink, Josine Sibum Siderius, Anika Mariam Ahmed about our statements in positioning as artists. They read our improvements and gave back constructed opinions. Our artist statements got shaped, glazed, polarized. Now we are ready to start working around the Tschumi pavilion, build, deconstruct, hide, provide, give away what we have been researching up till this moment."

"In deze weken werd het hoofdconcept geboren. We gaan werken onder de naam horizon. Jochem en zijn zoektochten, Vanina zal luisteren naar bekentenissen, Anna maakt een kaart en ik zal werken rond het thema afwijzing. Dit wordt een toeristisch attractiecentrum, een give away boekenkast, een station om een plattegrond te verzamelen voor een rondleiding door de stadshoeken. Daarnaast hadden we een vervolgafspraak met Josh Hattink, Josine Sibum Siderius, Anika Mariam Ahmed over onze uitspraken in de positionering als kunstenaar. Zij lazen onze verbeteringen en gaven geconstrueerde meningen terug. Onze artist statements werden gevormd, geglazuurd, gepolariseerd. Nu zijn we klaar om rond het Tschumipaviljoen te gaan werken, te bouwen, te deconstrueren, te verbergen, te voorzien, weg te geven wat we tot nu toe hebben onderzocht."

about midseason
The midseason program consists of a work period of 6 weeks with a substantive program and an exhibition period of 2 weeks, in which parts of the beginning artistry are treated. In the substantive program, artists and viewers from the network of the resort are used as coaches to transfer their acquired knowledge and experience to a new generation. The focus in the program is on: art in public space, personal ambitions, positioning as an artist, profiling and presentation. In 8 weeks these themes will be dealt with by coaches who will guide the newly graduated talents of Academy Minerva (FMI + bachelors) to get this clearer and to determine direction in their beginning artistic practice.
The midseason coaches are artists: Alban Karsten, Willem de Haan, Esther de Graaf, Karina Bakx and Ellen de Haan and viewers of Kunsthuis SYB's CIRCLES program: Josje Hattink and Anna-Rosja Haveman.
